(Note: This serves as a bit of preview for my column later today over at InsideMdSports.com. The material, other than a number or two, will be much different. But consider this supplementary since the themes are similar).
Quick, how many career points does Eric Hayes have?
Any clue? At all?
Sure, it feels like he's been around forever, so it must be quite a bit.
But the big games are only occasional, so maybe it isn't.
Yet the true clunkers happen only so often, so perhaps it's quite a bit.
It turns out Hayes is at 993 points after Sunday's 17-point outburst against Florida State. He's scored at least seven points in all but two games this year, so he's probably going to get to the 1,000-point plateau tomorrow night at Wake Forest.
That would make him the 48th player in Maryland history to reach that point. He'd also join this list of 24 luminaries who have played under Gary Williams to get there (number is Maryland career scoring rank):
1. Juan Dixon
6. Lonny Baxter
8. Keith Booth
9. Greivis Vasquez
10. Johnny Rhodes
11. Terence Morris
12. Walt Williams
14. Nik Caner-Medley
15. Laron Profit
18. James Gist
20. Exree Hipp
22. Tony Massenburg
23. Evers Burns
25. Joe Smith
29. Drew Nicholas
32. Mike Jones
33. Obinna Ekezie
36. Steve Blake
37. D.J. Strawberry
38. Duane Simpkins
39. Ekene Ibekwe
40. Chris McCray
43. Kevin McLinton
45. John Gilchrist
So who rolled up 1,000 points more quietly than Hayes? Maybe McLinton. Possibly Simpkins.
Which isn't to say Hayes isn't effective. It's just that it's hard to remember a guy who has received less buzz for his skillset in Maryland's program in recent memory.
Here is the complete list entering this year, Vasquez has since moved up to #9. Feel free to incorporate this into your post...

Oral ---
Thanks. Vasquez is now within five points of Booth, and 29 of 1,800 for his career.
