As noted last week, there have been 11 teams that have gone 13-3 in ACC play since the league expanded to nine. Another nine teams have gone 12-4.
Maryland, after last night's victory, will go either 13-3 or 12-4.
And now comes the request to see how those teams fared in the ACC tournament.
(It might also be worth mentioning that no ACC team has gone 12-4 and earned lower than a No. 4 seed in the NCAAs. No ACC team has gone 13-3 and earned lower than a No. 3 seed)
Anyway, here is the requested data, broken down first by record and then combined:
13-3 (11)
ACC champion: 1998 North Carolina, 2001 Duke, 2002 Duke
Runner-up: 1996 Georgia Tech. 2001 North Carolina, 2004 Duke
Semifinals: 1999 Maryland, 2003 Wake Forest, 2008 Duke, 2009 North Carolina
Quarterfinals: 2005 Wake Forest
12-4 (9)
ACC champion: 1995 Wake Forest, 1996 Wake Forest
Runner-up: 1995 North Carolina, 1997 Duke
Semifinals: 1994 Duke, 1995 Virginia, 1995 Maryland, 2006 North Carolina
Quarterfinals: 1993 Florida State
So, based on outcome, here's what exists on record so far:
* Five ACC champions (25 percent)
* Five ACC runners-up (25 percent)
* Eight semifinals (40 percent)
* Two first-day losers (10 percent)
And now you know.
