Gotta hit the road quickly tonight, and there wasn't much concrete to come out of today's Maryland football practice session.
Here's some basic tidbits.
* Joe Vellano is continuing a strong spring at defensive tackle. But even Ralph Friedgen isn't sure how much of it is Vellano playing at a high level and how much is him exploiting a shaky offensive front. Friedgen, though, is not complaining.
* Avery Murray missed his second straight practice with an abdominal injury. That's opened time for Ryan Donohue. Other nagging ailments: Torrey Smith (hip flexor), Lansford Watson (back) and Kenny Tate (neck). All practiced today.
* Maryland will scrimmage tomorrow night around 7:30. It's the first official scrimmage of the spring.
* Name we hadn't heard all spring popped up: Kerry Boykins. The sophomore, it seems, is doing well at slot receiver this spring.
* Friedgen started naming some freshmen he's hopeful can come in and play. No surprises here: Safety Titus Till and center Sal Conaboy. Among the freshmen not already in College Park, they have to rate among the favorites to get on the field next season.
* The big hole: Still right guard. That problem isn't getting solved this spring. Clearly, Friedgen is getting impatient with Justin Lewis. For now, Bennett Fulper is still getting strength back in his shoulder after surgery last fall. The one guy at full capacity is walk-on Josh Cary, but for all of his effort (and Friedgen has remarked on that a couple times this spring), he's still getting the sort of results expected when a much larger and more developed defensive lineman takes him on.
