Greivis Vasquez is no longer playing for Maryland.
That doesn't mean a No. 21 won't be making a difference.
Freshman Pe'Shon Howard will wear Vasquez's jersey number --- an interesting choice, but one with both an eye on Howard's past and his eagerness to match up with the legacy of a predecessor.
"I had it in high school," Howard said. "A lot of people asked if I minded if I change because of Greivis' legacy and they all told me they wanted me to keep it, and then Greivis said he didn't mind me keeping it. I thought it would be fun to experiment with it and see how it goes."
Of course, Howard got Vasquez's blessing as well --- but only after earning it.
"When I came in, it was known I wore 21 in high school," Howard said. "Rob [Ehsan] asked what number I wanted to wear and I said 21. G was right there and at first he said he wasn't sure. He had to see me to make sure I was tough enough to wear it. He came to a few games I played up here and he said I could wear it."
That said, Howard isn't putting too much pressure to make quite the same impact as the last No. 21.
"Greivis is Greivis, and it's kind of hard to compete with that," Howard said. "I was kind of leave my own legacy and get it done that way."
