Those paying attention to Sunday's Maryland-Georgia Tech broadcast no doubt saw the unmistakable figure of Jerome Burney sitting behind the Terrapins' bench.
The former Terp, who played in 26 games before chronic foot injuries cut short his career, was situated directly behind coach Gary Williams and his old teammates as Maryland made a trip to Burney's hometown.
The toughest part? Fighting the temptation to jump into a huddle from such close distance.
Still, the upbeat Burney --- decked out in a Maryland warmup shirt from last year --- is putting his kinesiology degree to good use. He's working as a personal trainer for guys attending his old high school --- Westlake High.
"I'm training out of my old high school," Burney said. "I've got a guy who plays football and is looking for a school to go to, trying to walk on since he really didn't have that much time. After the basketball season is over, I'll train some of the guys on the basketball team as well."
Burney said he's also making it a point to watch his younger brother's rec ball games, something he didn't have much of a chance to do during his college career.
Burney, who averaged 1.5 points and 1.7 rebounds during his Maryland career but still managed to roll up enough memorable plays for a respectable YouTube highlight video, shook his head and grinned when he was asked at halftime of Maryland's 74-63 victory if he had any words of wisdom for his old team.
"They got coach Williams," Burney cracked.
