Maryland scored 51 points on Wednesday ... and won.
To say the least, the Terrapins don't do that very often. The last time it happened was Dec. 12, 1985, when Maryland edged West Virginia 42-41. The coaches that day were Lefty Driesell and Gale Catlett, and Len Bias was Maryland's leading scorer with 16 points.
Among the other statistical tidbits stemming from the low-scoring triumph:
* It was the fewest points Maryland scored in a victory against an ACC team since Feb. 27, 1982 --- a 47-46 overtime (!) defeat of then-No. 1 Virginia.
* It was the fewest points Maryland scored in a home game since a 63-50 loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 31, 1986 --- Bob Wade's third game as head coach.
* Coupled with a 47-point outing Sunday at Miami, it was the first time Maryland scored 51 points or less in consecutive games since that Notre Dame game on New Year's Eve 1986 and a 69-47 loss at N.C. State three days later.
* It marked the 21st time in the shot clock era that Maryland scored less than 55 points. The Terps are 4-17 in those games.
* Just for fun the breakdown by coach of those 21 games: Gary Williams 9, Wade 6, Mark Turgeon 4, Driesell 2.
