It's always fun to see things pop up in college sports with the potential for a bit of hilarity.
It's also good when those items also double as sound outreach attempts for a school or program that could use some good vibes.
And that's where the Randy Edsall Google+ Hangout comes into play.
To the press release!
Randy Edsall will host a Google+ Hangout with Maryland football fans on National Signing Day (Feb. 6) at 4:00 p.m.
The Google+ Hangout will be moderated by quarterback C.J. Brown and will be one of the first opportunities fans have to hear reaction from coach Edsall on National Signing Day. To view the Hangout, fans can log on to their Google+ account by visiting Google.com/+. From there, the Hangout can be viewed by visiting the Randy Edsall Google+ page at 4 p.m. The Hangout will be posted on the Maryland Football YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/MDFootballVideo).
Fans can submit their questions for coach Edsall starting today, as well as during the Google+ Hangout. Questions can be sent via Twitter by using #MarylandFootball, Facebook (Maryland Football and Maryland Terrapins) and email (MarylandFootball@umd.edu).
Considering there is more than two weeks to cull questions, chances are Maryland will have something constructive to provide Edsall to answer from the standpoint of recruiting (and maybe some other stuff, too) and not just a litany of complaints about his first two seasons. For the school, the Terps and Edsall, that's a good thing. Plus, doing anything to engage fans is welcome for a program often lost in the shuffle.
And from a media standpoint? It means whatever interviews for the day will be done by 4 p.m. That's friendly for scribes who actually have print deadlines to deal with.
Should I not get all my questions answered, this also provides a backup plan. If Edsall replies to "GaryCrowton'sWirelessNetwork," you'll know where the query came from.
