Maryland's basketball team had captains at the start of the season, a generally ceremonial position that usually isn't mentioned much deeper into the year unless it's a matter of convenience.
Or inconvenience, as the case might be.
Coach Mark Turgeon let it slip he removed the captain title from both James Padgett and Pe'Shon Howard in the week leading into Saturday's 83-81 defeat of Duke.
"If we can be committed to being a good teammate, committed to being good leaders…I stripped guys of being captains this week," Turgeon said. "I’m the captain fo the team. If we’re just committed, that’s all I want."
Howard was "temporarily suspended" this week and was not on the bench Saturday.
And as for Padgett, the lone four-year senior on the roster?
"We understand that he’s the captain of the team," said Padgett, who had eight points in 13 minutes against Duke. "We wants to lead the team the way he wants it. Everybody tries to do their best to be a leader, but he’s the captain."
