This was originally supposed to be a week of offering up some snippets of an interview from late last week with Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams. Lots of stuff, from the meaningful to the mundane, has gotten in the way of that happening.
Well, not anymore.
Williams talked for more than 40 minutes on an array of subjects, but one fans clearly are interested in at the moment is who will replace Chuck Driesell on the Terrapins' staff. Driesell was named the head coach at The Citadel last week.
Williams is in the midst of his first protracted search for an assistant since Driesell was hired in 2006, and one thing is certain: He is in no hurry to make a choice given the recruiting calendar.
"There's no time, really," Williams said. "The next thing is the recruiting period in July. Here, graduation is May 24. What you're doing right now is making sure the players are doing what they're supposed to do academically and in the strength training program. That's what you do this time of year."
One interesting thing is now that nearly all of the Division I openings have been filled, the assistant landscape can start solving itself as well.
That includes the Maryland gig.
"In this situation, when there's no rush, the first thing you do is see who's available," Williams said. "I have a list that I write down, but also in my head, of assistants who I think are good. Whether this is the right situation for the, you have to work that through. You have to take a deep breath because during the whole process with Chuck, there's no guarantee he's going to get the job. You don't waste time in case he doesn't get the job. But you have your list and you have your people who have a pretty good feel for things and then you go from there."
