The final Directors Cup standings were released this week.
Maryland is right back where it finished last year.
The Terrapins were 28th for the second straight year in the all-sports competition and ranked fifth among ACC schools.
First up, Maryland's progression in the competition in the last 10 years:
2001: 40th
2002: 44th
2003: 22nd
2004: 24th
2005: 28th
2006: 27th
2007: 40th
2008: 52nd
2009: 28th
2010: 28th
In short, this result is right in line with what Maryland's done for much of the last eight years.
Anyway, here's how the ACC stacks up:
3. Virginia
5. Florida State
7. North Carolina
10. Duke
28. Maryland
38. Virginia Tech
45. Georgia Tech
48. Clemson
53. Wake Forest
58. Miami
63. Boston College
89. N.C. State
The Directors Cup, of course, pops up as a source of incentive pay in a few contracts of athletic directors. Namely. ...
* Florida State's Randy Spetman gets a $50,000 bonus for a top-five Directors Cup finish. Finishing first would have netted him $100,000.
* North Carolina's Dick Baddour gets 1/12th (one-twelfth) of his annual salary --- basically, a month's pay --- for a top-10 finish in the Directors Cup. Based on his base salary from a contract signed last year, Baddour will receive $24,583 for the Tar Heels' efforts.
* Maryland's Debbie Yow would have received $10,000 for a top-25 finish, which the Terps just missed out on. But it wasn't so close that an obvious difference --- namely, if men's lacrosse won another game --- would have made a difference.
Whether the Terps had simply beaten Notre Dame in the quarterfinals, made it to Memorial Day or even won a title, the standings change would have been the same: A bump up to 26th place.
