What exactly did Dave Philistin give Maryland during his career?
How about two good seasons as a starter and one great Seinfeld reference.
Philistin was the closest thing the program has probably ever had to a Bubble Boy, sleeping in an altitude machine he completely swore by throughout his senior season in 2008.
Interestingly, he was even better the previous year. Philistin was the middle linebacker job in camp and rolled up 124 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss. Included was a 21-tackle game against Georgia Tech, part of a run of eight straight games with double-digit stops.
When Alex Wujciak returned from an ACL tear in 2008, Philistin shifted to the weak side. His numbers weren't as prolific (94 tackles, 5 TFL, 2 sacks), but the switch of positions had a little something to do with that.
In retrospect, it's a mild surprise Philistin didn't at least get an honorable mention all-conference nod as a junior. But Erin Henderson rolled up even more tackles than Philistin did, and voters didn't seem to be interested in vouching for two linebackers from a 6-6 team.
No matter. Philistin played three linebacker positions during his career and particularly excelled at two of them. He never led the Terps in tackles, but he still was a crucial piece to a pair of teams that reached bowl games in the latter half of his career.
