Maryland's latest depth chart has LaQuan Williams ahead of Ronnie Tyler as the Terrapins' slot receiver, with Kerry Boykins the third option at the position.
Coach Ralph Friedgen, though, didn't think it was a particularly big deal.
"We could start any one of those three kids," Friedgen said. "It might because he’s a senior, I don’t know. They’re interchangeable. We feel the same way at X and the same way at Z, even with Torrey [Smith] there. We will play two deep at wide receivers."
Not sure a lot of Maryland fans would agree Smith could sit and it wouldn't make a difference, but that isn't the point of this post.
Instead, Williams seems to be positioned as well as at any point since 2007. And Tyler, while valuable, clearly isn't assured a starting gig when Maryland opens against Navy on Sept. 6.
There's also the cynical approach to this. Friedgen acknowledged last month that both Tyler and defensive tackle Zach Kerr weren't quite out of the academic thicket yet --- and said as recently as last week there was no update for either player. If Tyler doesn't make it, the shuffling could allow someone to say the Terps didn't lose a starter.
More likely, though, this is a reflection of a superb camp by Williams, who has played well since the spring and was going to be the No. 4 receiver if he didn't charge past Tyler for the starting slot gig. Both guys will play plenty if available, and ultimately this is the sort of question that gets asked in the last week of camp when there are few regular developments beyond crossing off a day on the calendar as the opener approaches.
