Another day, another tight end injury for the Maryland football program.
Senior Will Yeatman suffered a broken finger on his left hand, a school spokesman said tonight. He is expected to miss six weeks.
Based on that timeline, Yeatman could return in time for Maryland's Sept. 25 game against Florida International. The Terrapins open ACC play a week later against Duke.
Yeatman, who began his career at Notre Dame, has not played football since 2007. He transferred to Maryland in early 2009, and played attack for the Terps' lacrosse team the last two years.
Maryland was optimistic a player of his size (6-6, 250 pounds) could provide some blocking help to a young offensive line. Instead, those plans will be shelved until at least a quarter of the way through the regular season.
Yeatman is the second tight end to suffer an injury in the first week of camp. Junior Lansford Watson has a slight MCL tear, but coach Ralph Friedgen said he hopes Watson can play through it and delay surgery until after the season.
Nonetheless, a position with some options is at least temporarily thinned out. Devonte Campbell, who started the last four games last fall, and sophomore Matt Furstenburg are the only healthy tight ends with game experience.
Walk-on Ryan Schlothauer and redshirt freshman Dave Stinebaugh are also available.
