Maryland left Morgantown on Saturday with one loss and two banged up quarterbacks.
The question remains how ready those QBs will be to play Saturday against Florida International.
Jamarr Robinson has a bruised shoulder. Danny O'Brien left two straight games with a high ankle sprain.
And Ralph Friedgen is counting on both to be available this week.
"Both of them are getting better. Both are anticipated to play," Friedgen said. "O'Brien, the best thing we can do for him is rest him. He told me yesterday he was better than what he was last Monday. We didn't know if that was going to be the case after Saturday. I take that as a positive. How long is it going to take for him to be 100 percent? I don't know that. It's a high ankle sprain and they tell me that he could be ready to play but we'll have to see."
So on the one hand, O'Brien is "anticipated to play." On the other, he needs rest to heal. It's tough to reconcile those two ideas.
The optimal scenario for Maryland is it jumps out to a big lead early on a team that has not permitted Rutgers or Texas A&M to do so the last two weeks. Then, the Terps can simply stick with Robinson the entire game and re-evaluate O'Brien heading into the Oct. 2 ACC opener against Duke.
Put another way: If O'Brien plays a snap with Maryland up more than a couple touchdowns on Saturday, it would constitute a significant surprise.
Then again, maybe he gets well. But Maryland probably wouldn't mind trying squeeze by without O'Brien this week if it means he'll be better prepared to be effective in the second half of the season.
"Hopefully, he's better today than he was yesterday and progresses as the week goes on," Friedgen said.
