Maryland defensive lineman Masengo Kabongo has left the program, coach Ralph Friedgen said.
Kabongo was not in attendance at Maryland's 17-14 defeat of Navy at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.
The redshirt sophomore played in six games last year, and his lone tackle in 2009 was a sack in the season opener at California. He appeared just once in Maryland's final seven games last fall.
Kabongo slipped off the depth chart during camp this season, falling behind fellow sophomores Justin Anderson, Isaiah Ross and Carl Russell at Anchor.
When asked about Kabongo during the second week of camp, Friedgen offered a terse --- but telling --- reply on how the Connecticut native was faring.
"So-so," Friedgen said then. "He has to be more consistent and more dependable in all areas of his life."
Kabongo is the first of the 16 true freshmen Maryland brought into the program in 2008 to depart. Of the rest of that class, nine players started the Terrapins' opener and all but two appeared in the victory. Both tight end Devonte Campbell and tailback Gary Douglas missed the game with injury.
Kabongo's departure unofficially leaves Maryland with 82 scholarship players.
