Maryland's defensive line depth took a hit during Saturday's 62-3 rout of Morgan State.
Redshirt freshman Marcus Whitefield dislocated his patella tendon, and coach Ralph Friedgen said the defensive end would undergo an MRI exam on Monday to determine the extent of the damage.
Whitfield, a converted linebacker, suffered the injury while tackling Morgan State's Keith Lee late in the second quarter and Maryland leading 38-0. It was Whitfield's first extensive playing time; he appeared briefly on special teams in the season opener against Navy.
"Ugh," defensive coordinator Don Brown groaned when Whitfield's injury was mentioned. "Here's a young guy who's really ... last week probably wasn't a good game for him, but this was in pass rush stuff and what he gives us with energy. I'm really disappointed, because the play he gets hurt on, he's flying to make the tackle."
