Goodbye, EagleBank Bowl; hello, Military Bowl

Maryland will not play in the EagleBank Bowl this season.

That's because Washington's bowl game has switched names for the second time since it was established in 2008.

The Dec. 29 game at RFK Stadium is now the Military Bowl according to the event's Facebook page. It will pit the No. 8 selection out of the ACC against a Conference USA team. Northrup Grumman will be the presenting sponsor.

The bowl was conceived as the Congressional Bowl, though EagleBank bought the naming rights in a deal announced in September 2008. Wake Forest beat Navy in the '08 EagleBank Bowl, while UCLA upended Temple in last year's event.

The game does have military tie-ins. Army would have played in the game last year if it became bowl eligible.

Navy has a deal to return to the Military Bowl in 2011, while an agreement exists with Army for the game in 2012. Both contracts are contingent on the respective academies becoming bowl eligible.

Maryland moves De'Onte Arnett to offensive line In a move aimed at helping the future moreso than the present, Maryland's De'Onte Arnett switched from defensive line to offensive line this week. Arnett, who played in just one game, will provide depth to a unit thinned out by the loss of tackles Justin Gilbert and Pete DeSouza to season-ending injuries. A Maryland basketball scrimmage and a D1scourse meet-and-greet It is basketball season, of course, and naturally Maryland has a scrimmage open to fans before Saturday's football game. The scrimmage at Comcast Center will start at noon and is expected to last two hours. It's also an opportunity for those who would like a little meet-and-greet with a blogger to do so. (OK, I realize the number of folks who would like to talk to me is far less than the number who want a glimpse at Pe'Shon Howard or Mychal Parker. No need to re-iterate that in the comments).
