Maryland has its 2011 early-season basketball tournament solidified: The Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
The Terrapins will be joined in the Nov. 17-20 (with games on Thursday, Friday and Sunday) by Alabama, Colorado, Iona, Purdue, Temple, Wichita State and one team to be announced.
It will be the Terrapins' first trip to Puerto Rico since beating AU-Puerto Rico, UCLA and Pittsburgh to win the San Juan Shootout in 1998.
Maryland plays Temple this season in the BB&T Classic, but the field will be mostly an unfamilar one. A look at the Terrapins' series records for the other five announced teams:
Alabama: Terps lead 3-0; last meeting in 1985
Colorado: No meetings
Iona: Terps lead 2-0; last meeting in 2006
Purdue: No meetings
Wichita State: Terps lead 1-0; lone meeting in 1968
And, just for fun, how this trip compares to other early events Maryland has played in over the last dozen years:
RECENT MARYLAND EARLY-SEASON, OUT-OF-D.C. TOURNAMENTS
1998: San Juan Shootout, Puerto Rico (WON)
1999: Preseason NIT, New York

Which tournament did we upset Michigan State in? I believe it was 2008-2009, but I could be wrong.

Andrew ---
That was the Old Spice Classic, where Maryland lost the other two games in the November 2008 event. Terps also beat Michigan State in the 2006 Coaches vs. Cancer final.
