Signing day has come and (mostly) gone, and the class rankings are in for Maryland.
Rivals.com has the Terrapins at No. 46.
Scout.com places Maryland at No. 59.
Neither ranking of the Terps' 20-man class is, shall we say, particularly flattering.
And Maryland coach Randy Edsall offered a response even before he was really asked for one.
"What people have to understand is this: People get too caught up on these rankings and I can just tell you, I've been in this for over 30 years. I've been at all different levels. The only ranking that really matters is what me and my staff feel," Edsall said Wednesday. "I think it's been proven at places, and I've been at places before, where we might not have had recruiting classes that ranked that high but we went out and won games, and the bottom line is winning games.
"Recruiting is important, but you can take a look at some schools --- and I'm not going to name them, because I'd get in trouble, but I've got a bunch of them at the tip of my tongue --- that you could say had all these great recruiting classes but they never won championships. It's not necessarily --- you don't win the championship in February. Some people think that you do. You don't. There's a lot of people who win in February, but they don't win from September through December."
And as for this class?
"All I know is I feel very, very good about these 20 young men that we signed today, and I feel each and every one of them --- as long as they stay healthy and do the things we ask them to do --- can contribute and be a very, very big part of the success we're going to have here," Edsall said.
