Maryland fills running backs coach position with ex-Clemson assistant Powell

Randy Edsall's search for his second running backs coach in as many months netted an assistant plenty familiar with the ACC.

Maryland hired Andre Powell, a former Virginia (1996-2000), North Carolina (2001-06) and Clemson (2007-2010) assistant, to take over its running back coaching duties.

Powell, who was fired last month at Clemson, takes over a unit that returns two of its top three rushers (Davin Meggett and D.J. Adams) and both of its regular fullbacks (Haroon Brown and Taylor Watson).

Powell stint at North Carolina overlapped with the time new Maryland tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator John Dunn was a video assistant (2004-05) and graduate assistant (2006) with the Tar Heels.

A random thought on Clemson Strange but true: Clemson, with its defeat of Boston College on Tuesday, matched its best 10-game start in conference play under Oliver Purnell. This, of course, is Brad Brownell's first season --- one in which expectations were depressed in Tigertown after Trevor Booker's departure. A choppy 5-4 start didn't help matters. And while Clemson just got its best victory tonight, it does still have opportunities to beat Duke (granted, in Durham) and North Carolina. Also interesting: Clemson has made it to the 10-game mark with a winning record in league play for each of the last five years. The rundown...
