Boy do I hate to do this.
I really do.
But right now, one of the most accomplished teams in the country is Louisiana State.
Yes, the Tigers have a way of looking bad while winning. And it's nothing new; they got outgained by more than 20 yards a game last year en route to a 9-4 season.
Great defense, shudder-worthy offense. That's the rap on LSU, then and now.
But the Tigers have victories against West Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. There's not a signature win in there, so it's tough to rank LSU in the top five.
There's also a string of decent-to-really good teams in there, too. Vanderbilt might not be good, but its other two results (handling Mississippi and nearly topping Northwestern) suggest the Commodores aren't dreadful.
The eyeball test says Louisiana State doesn't belong in the top 10. The Tigers' accomplishments suggest otherwise.
And that's part of the fun of a results-based ballot.
